UC DECA Competes in International Competition

Congratulations to the UCJSHS DECA students! Emalee Bocanegra, Reagan Hoggatt, Sophia Spence, and Sydney Ralston qualified for the International DECA Competition in Orlando, Florida. The students, and DECA adviser, Ms. Becky Kuehl, arrived on Friday, April 26th and came home on Wednesday, May 1st.

The young ladies attended the School-Based Enterprise Academy and presented while we were there. The young ladies were recognized with an Award of Excellence. They did not make the finals but both groups scored above an 80% on their presentation. This is the first time that both groups have been recognized in the same year.

While in Orlando, we visited Disney Springs, Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, Cocoa Beach, and Walt Disney World.

Ms. Becky Kuehl wants to thank all of you for your continued support of Union City DECA. Our small school makes a name for itself in lots of ways. Ms. Kuehl is extremely proud to be part of that.

They’re Creepy and They’re Kooky...and They’re Coming to UCJSHS

The Addams Family Eyes Newly Set Performance Dates - By Brad Hoggatt

The energy is alive amongst the cast of this year’s spring musical at Union City Junior/ Senior High School. But when you’re dealing with The Addams Family, energy isn’t the only thing that seems to be “living.” Directors Gary Zimmers and Brad Hoggatt are excited to bring this madcap, misunderstood family to life for the community to enjoy.

The Addams Family is a musical comedy with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa and book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice. The show is based on The Addams Family characters created by Charles Addams in his single-panel gag cartoons, which depict a ghoulish American family with an affinity for all things macabre. The musical opened on Broadway in April 2010. The original cast featured Nathan Lane as Gomez and Bebe Neuwirth as Morticia. The production closed on December 31, 2011, but a revised national tour of North America began in September 2011. The production has won numerous awards including the Drama League Award and Drama Desk Award.

In the kooky, upside-down world of the Addams Family, to be sad is to be happy, to feel pain is to feel joy, and death and suffering are the stuff of their dreams. Nonetheless, this family still has to deal with many of the same challenges faced by any other family, but the spookiest nightmare of all has them struggling: the Addams kids are growing up. The Addams clan have lived by their unique values for hundreds of years and Gomez and Morticia would be only too happy to continue living that way. Their dark, beloved daughter Wednesday, however, is now an eighteen year-old young woman who is ready for a life of her own. She has fallen in love with Lucas Beineke, a sweet, smart boy from a normal, respectable Ohio family — the most un-Addams sounding person one could be! And to make matters worse, she has invited the Beinekes to their home for dinner. In one fateful, hilarious night, secrets are disclosed, relationships are tested, and the Addams family must face up to the one horrible thing they’ve managed to avoid for generations: they must face change.

The heads of the household, Morticia and Gomez Addams, are being portrayed by junior Heidi Livingston and freshman Braydon Hoggatt, respectively. Senior Reagan Hoggatt has been cast as Wednesday Addams with her brother, Pugsley, being played by Mikayla Green. Shelby King, senior, is playing Grandma Addams while Kaley Adkins is tackling the role of Uncle Fester. Rounding out these misfits is David Bowers as the ever-present Lurch. Mal and Alice Beineke will be played by Seniors Alex Brag and Courtney Whitesel, respectively, with their son, Lucas, played by first time musical participant Tabius Reagan. The ancestors, the muses of the musical, will be portrayed by Kalam and Sylaris Denney, Owen Elifritz, Gloria Cardona, Alissyn Hofacker, Emily Livingston, Katie Elliott, Mariah Claywell, Lyndsee Mills, Kennedy Phillips, Andrea Sanders, and Christina Sowinski.

This year’s production will see a change of performance dates, so the community is encouraged to mark their calendars accordingly. Instead of being the Friday night/ Sunday afternoon performances they have had in the recent past, Zimmers and Hoggatt are excited to return to their roots with the performances being on Friday evening and Saturday evening. “This adjustment is a welcomed one,” says Zimmers. “It not only opens a day in our personal schedules, but it also allows our students and our community to experience TWO great school productions over this weekend.” Community members can now see The Addams Family on either Friday, March 15 at 7 p.m. or Saturday, March 16 at 7 p.m.

Tickets are not yet available for purchase, but will be soon. This rollicking retelling of an American staple is one not to miss!
