Alternative Classroom "Brings the Heat" and More
UCJSHS began a new educational program on campus this fall semester. The Alternative Classroom (AC) helps students who have been facing behavioral, academic, and social challenges that have put them behind on their path to graduation. The AC utilizes a variety of unique learning environments to help these students succeed.
Currently, Brandy Neargarder and Keith Maloy lead this program with a group of twelve (12) students. Mr. Maloy reports that working with students who need this kind of help requires patience and a special temperament. However, at this early stage of the program, the students have achieved excellent results. Mr. Maloy also reported that over 60 credits have been earned by the current students in the AC since the semester began.
The AC also frequently plans special "hands on" activities and monthly field trips to give the students opportunities for learning the life lessons young people need before they enter the "real world" life of adults. Last Friday (October 4), the AC "turned up the heat" and completed a "how to" cooking adventure. Then yesterday (October 9), the AC visited the Levi Coffin House and Museum in Fountain City, the Fountain City park, and a local Pumpkin Patch that offers admission for freewill donations (another life lesson for the students).
