Three Jr. High Students Acting it Up with Jay County Civic Theatre
By Brad Hoggatt
In June 2019, Jay County Civic Theatre will be presenting the Broadway smash hit “Newsies”, based on the 1992 musical Newsies, which in turn was inspired by the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York City. The show has music by Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast), lyrics by Jack Feldman, and a book by Harvey Fierstein based on film's screenplay by Bob Tzudiker and Noni White. The musical premiered at the Paper Mill Playhouse in 2011 and made its Broadway debut in 2012, where it played for more than 1,000 performances before touring. In 2012, “Newsies” was nominated for 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
Three local youth, eighth graders Kalam and Sylaris Denney, along with seventh grader Sullivan Thomas, recently auditioned for this upcoming production. Over 100 people auditioned for roles in this show, including people from Fort Wayne, Celina, and even some college students from Ball State University. Excitedly, all three earned parts in this highly-competitive market. Those auditioning were required to read lines, sing, and learn a dance routine. Shannie Denney, mother of Kalam and Sylaris, is a very proud parent. “The kids didn’t earn a major role, but knowing that they were asked to participate considering how many people tried out is pretty awesome and amazing!”
As dreams go, one cannot discount coming from a small town. Great things can happen to anyone at anytime, from any place. The community is encouraged to support this group of young thespians by attending this fantastic show.
